Letting Go of The Old To Create Space for New

Breakthrough Idea of the Week

Letting Go of the Good to Make Room for the Great

Recently, I had to make a tough decision. I’d spent the last year working on a project that was good—really good—but it wasn’t making me feel great. It wasn’t lighting me up the way I knew it should. After much reflection, I realized that holding onto this project was preventing me from moving forward with something even greater. And that’s when I had to confront a truth I often share with the leaders I coach: As you become more successful, the real challenge isn’t choosing between good and bad, but letting go of the good so you can create space for the great.

This sounds simple, but the process of letting go is anything but easy. It’s hard because we fall into what’s known as sunk cost bias—the tendency to keep investing in something because of how much we’ve already put into it. We think, “I’ve spent so much time and energy on this, I can’t let it go now!” even when deep down, we know it’s no longer the right fit.

The reality is, holding onto what’s good—just because it’s comfortable or familiar—can prevent us from experiencing the truly great. When we refuse to let go, we stay stuck, blocking new opportunities and growth from coming into our lives.

This reminds me of a story from ancient Indian wisdom

story

In the jungles of India, hunters once used a clever method to trap monkeys. They would hollow out a coconut, leaving just a small hole at the top. Inside the coconut, they placed a piece of fruit or a nut that the monkeys loved. When a monkey came along, it would reach its hand into the coconut to grab the treat. But once its fist was wrapped around the prize, it couldn’t pull its hand back out—the hole was too small for the clenched fist.

The monkey was trapped, not by the coconut itself, but by its own refusal to let go. All it had to do was release the treat, and it would be free. But instead, the monkey would struggle, unwilling to let go of the fruit, even though that was the very thing keeping it stuck.

This story is a powerful metaphor for what we experience in life. Like the monkey, we hold on tightly to things that seem good—projects, relationships, habits—because we don’t want to let go of what we’ve invested in. But in doing so, we trap ourselves. We stay stuck in place, even when the only thing keeping us there is our own attachment.

The lesson here is simple: letting go is the key to freedom. It’s the only way to create space for something better to come into your life. Just as the monkey could have regained its freedom by letting go of the fruit, we too can open up to new possibilities when we release what’s no longer serving us.

Pause & Reflect

Pause & Reflect icon
  1. Is there something good in your life that you’ve been holding onto, even though deep down you know it’s no longer what you need?
  2. Are you keeping it because of how much you’ve already invested, or because it’s familiar, even if it’s no longer fulfilling?

  3. What might happen if you let it go? What new opportunities could arise if you created space for something greater?

The Letting Go Practice

Here’s a simple but powerful exercise to help you release what’s no longer serving you and create space for the great:

1.

Identify What’s Holding You Back: Take a moment to think about a project, relationship, or commitment that feels good but isn’t truly fulfilling anymore. Write it down.

2.

Acknowledge the Sunk Costs: Be honest about what’s keeping you tied to it. Is it the time, energy, or effort you’ve already invested? Recognize that these are sunk costs—they don’t determine your future.

3.

Envision What’s Possible: Visualize what could take the place of this project or commitment once you let it go. Imagine the energy, time, and opportunities that could come your way once space is freed up.

4.

Take One Action: Commit to one small step toward letting go. This could be a conversation, a decision, or simply mentally releasing your attachment. Trust that by letting go, you’re making room for something even better.

Final Thought

Letting go of something good is one of the hardest things we face, but it’s also one of the most important. When we release what no longer serves us, we create space for the great things to enter our lives. This week, I encourage you to reflect on where you might be holding on too tightly. Be brave enough to let go, and trust that something greater is waiting for you.

Keep playing your Infinite Game,
Coach Sid

PS: If today’s message about letting go resonated with you, forward it to a friend or colleague who might need a reminder to release what’s no longer serving them.
