Setting the Tone

As entrepreneurs and leaders, we often feel the pressure to have all the answers, to project unwavering certainty in our decisions. But here’s something I’ve noticed about the greatest thinkers and mentors I’ve worked with: they exhibit what I like to call confident humility. They hold strong opinions but are willing to let go of them when faced with new evidence or better ideas.

This week, let’s explore the power of confident humility and how it can transform the way you lead.

Let’s dive in.

Breakthrough Idea of the Week

Confident Humility – Strong Opinions, Loosely Held

There’s a common trait I’ve noticed in the most successful leaders, thinkers, and entrepreneurs I’ve met: they have strong opinions, but they hold them loosely. This balance—having confidence in your ideas while being open to rethinking them—can be a game changer for both personal growth and business success.

Adam Grant, in his book Think Again, calls this confident humility. It’s the ability to express conviction without being overly attached to your current beliefs. The key isn’t in weakening your opinions or being indecisive, but in recognizing that you might be wrong—and being okay with that.

Think of it like driving with a GPS. You might have a clear destination in mind, and your current route seems like the best option. But what if you encounter roadblocks, or what if another path could get you there faster? Confident humility allows you to reroute when necessary. It’s not about abandoning the destination, but being open to adjusting how you get there.

Confident humility

The most successful people I know don’t cling to ideas just because they’ve invested time or effort into them. They listen, reflect, and have the humility to change course when new insights come to light. This isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a mark of true leadership.

When you lead with confident humility, you create an environment where learning thrives, innovation is possible, and mistakes become stepping stones to greater success.

Pause & Reflect

1.

Think about a recent decision you made or an idea you were passionate about. Have you been holding onto it tightly, despite new information or perspectives?

2.

How might you benefit from loosening your grip and reconsidering your position?

Coaching Tool of the Week

Practice Confident Humility

This week, let’s focus on practicing confident humility in your daily life and decision-making. Here’s a simple exercise to help you flex this muscle:

1.

Revisit a Strong Opinion: Identify one strong opinion you’ve held recently, either in business or your personal life. It could be about a decision you made, a strategy you’re pursuing, or an approach you’ve defended.

2.

Invite New Perspectives: Seek out someone with a different viewpoint, or review any new data or insights that challenge your current belief. Ask yourself: What if I’m wrong? What am I not seeing? This step requires you to actively listen and remain open, even if it’s uncomfortable.

3.

Rethink, Don’t Defend: Instead of automatically defending your original position, embrace a curious mindset. Play the devil’s advocate with your own ideas. Ask yourself: How could this opinion be better? Is there another way forward that I haven’t considered?

4.

Adjust as Needed: After weighing new insights, be willing to adjust your approach if necessary. This doesn’t mean you must abandon your idea entirely, but it shows strength in pivoting when better options emerge.

5.

Build a Culture of Humility: Whether in your company or personal life, encourage others to share their insights without fear of judgment. Leaders who foster confident humility build environments where creativity and learning thrive.

Final Thought

Confident humility is about more than just being open-minded—it’s about recognizing that growth requires us to challenge our assumptions, rethink our strategies, and constantly evolve. The greatest leaders don’t fear being wrong; they fear being stagnant. By holding your opinions loosely and allowing room for rethinking, you give yourself the freedom to grow and lead in ways you never thought possible.

So, ask yourself: What strong opinion can I hold more loosely this week? Your willingness to rethink may just open the door to your next breakthrough.

Keep playing your Infinite Game,
Coach Sid

P.S. If this concept of confident humility sparked something in you, share it with a colleague or fellow entrepreneur. Let’s create a community of leaders who know that true strength lies in the willingness to rethink and grow.
