Achieve More by Doing Less in 2025

The Counterintuitive Power of Subtraction: Achieve More by Doing Less in 2025

January often feels like a blank canvas. We fill it with ambitious plans, new routines, and bigger goals. But as the ball dropped this year, I found myself wondering: What if the true breakthrough for 2025 isn’t found in addition, but in subtraction?

This isn’t the advice you’ll hear in most New Year’s speeches. You’re told to push harder, aim higher, and pack your calendar with resolutions. But what if every “yes” to something new is also a “no” to the space you need to thrive? What if, instead of committing to 10 new habits, you committed to cutting 3 that no longer serve you?

This year, I’m flipping the script. What could you achieve in 2025 by intentionally doing less?

The Counterintuitive Power of Subtraction: Achieve More by Doing Less in 2025

Breakthrough Idea of the Week

The Counterintuitive of Subtraction

Most people approach the New Year with a mindset of scarcity: they believe they need more—more goals, more habits, more hustle—to fill a gap in their lives. But often, it’s the too muchness that holds us back.

Think about it: a garden grows best when it’s pruned, not overrun with weeds. A river flows strongest when it’s not split into too many tributaries. Your energy works the same way.

Last year, a client came to me in January with 12 resolutions. By March, most of them had fizzled out. She felt defeated—not because she lacked discipline, but because she had overcomplicated her vision. Together, we did something radical: we cut her list down to just two key goals, and she achieved both by the end of the year.

The counterintuitive truth? The less you focus on, the more impactful you can be. In 2025, your most powerful resolution might not be what you add—but what you remove.

Pause & Reflect

Instead of asking yourself what you want to do in 2025, ask yourself:

  1. What do I no longer need to prove?
Often, our commitments and goals are tied to outdated definitions of success or external validation. What would happen if you let go of the need to prove yourself in one area of your life?
  2. Where am I confusing activity with progress?
Look at your daily routines. Are you mistaking busyness for true accomplishment? Identify one area where “doing less” could actually move you further

COACHING TOOL OF THE WEEK

The Subtraction Exercise

This week’s tool will guide you to identify the one thing you’re holding onto that, if released, would create space for a breakthrough. This isn’t about random decluttering—it’s about identifying the single domino whose removal creates exponential impact.

1.

Pick a Theme for Subtraction
Choose one domain of your life to focus on: Work, Relationships, Mindset, or Time.

2.

Identify the “Anchor” Holding You Down
In this domain, ask: What is one commitment, habit, or belief that feels heavy, outdated, or out of alignment with my 2025 vision?

3.

Perform a Thought Experiment
Imagine releasing this anchor. Visualize what your energy, time, or focus would feel like without it. What opportunities or possibilities might emerge? Write down three immediate benefits.

4.

Take the First Step This Week
Choose a micro-action to begin releasing this anchor. For example:

  • If it’s a draining work commitment, consider delegating or renegotiating it.
  • If it’s a limiting belief, write a counter-belief and repeat it daily.
  • If it’s a time drain, cancel, decline, or schedule less of it.

5.

Track Your Energy Shift
At the end of the week, note how releasing this anchor has impacted your energy and focus.

Final Thought

This New Year, don’t just resolve to do more—resolve to be more by doing less. Embrace the counterintuitive power of subtraction, and you might find that the simplicity you create is the spark for your biggest breakthroughs yet.
