Breakthrough Idea of the Week

Your Personal Board of Advisors

We often hear of successful companies having strong boards of advisors—people with diverse expertise, wisdom, and connections. These advisors provide guidance in times of growth, transition, or uncertainty. But what if you could create your own personal board of advisors, a group of individuals who represent the qualities, insights, and perspectives you most need in your life and work?

Imagine this: you are the CEO of You Inc., and your life is your enterprise. Who would you invite to sit at your table of counsel? Perhaps you choose mentors who have shaped your career, coaches or guides who provide wise counsel, or historical figures whose lessons stand the test of time. The beauty of a personal board of advisors is that they don’t have to be physically present or even alive; they are symbolic representatives of the energy and wisdom you want to channel.

Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road, but the right advisors can help you navigate it with confidence. Your personal board of advisors provides you with the mindset, strategic advice, and emotional support to keep you moving toward your goals. The key here is to get the right people in your boat.

Coaching Tool of the Week

Build Your Personal Board

This week, let’s focus on strategically assembling your personal board of advisors. Use this tool to think deeply about who you need for your long-term success, particularly over the next five years both in your business and your life.

Steps to Build Your Personal Board:

1.

Future Focus: Think about where you want to be in the next five years, both in life and business. Consider the long-term vision that drives you. What kinds of advisors do you need to help you succeed in this time frame?

2.

Choose Your Categories: Here are some key types of advisors to consider:

  • Strategic Thinker: Someone who excels at long-term planning and decision-making. They help you see beyond immediate challenges and focus on the bigger picture.
  • Industry Expert: A person with deep knowledge of your field or an area where you need more insight. Their expertise can help you avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities.
  • Innovator: This individual challenges conventional thinking and pushes you toward creative, outside-the-box solutions.
  • Connector: A well-networked person who can open doors, make introductions, and connect you with opportunities that align with your vision.
  • Coach: Someone who provides personal development guidance, keeps you accountable, and helps you work through your internal barriers.
  • Mentor: A seasoned individual who has walked a similar path and can offer wisdom from their lived experience.
  • Supporter: An emotional anchor, someone who believes in you unconditionally and offers encouragement during tough times.

3.

Clarify Their Roles: For each person you envision on your board, write down the specific qualities or expertise they bring to your life. Why are they the right “who” to have in your boat for the next stage of your journey?

4.

Invoke Their Guidance: In moments of decision-making or when you need clarity, turn to your personal board. Ask yourself: “What would my Strategic Thinker or Mentor advise me to do in this situation?” Use their perspective to guide your decisions.

Final Thought

The journey to success is never a solo one. As you consider the people in your life this week, reflect on whether your current advisors are aligned with your long-term vision.

Are they helping you evolve into the person you need to become for the next phase of your journey? Your personal board of advisors should be a catalyst for growth, not just support for where you are today.
