What If the Next Level Isn’t Up?

Growth

Rethinking growth when “more” stops working.

There was a time in my life when I thought every next level had to mean “up.”

More revenue.
More speed.
More visibility.

And for a while, that belief worked.

It got me moving. It got me wins. It even gave me a sense of safety.

But here’s the thing about high performers: we become addicted to “upward growth” the way some people get addicted to caffeine.

It’s a hit. It feels good. It proves something.

And when it wears off, we need more.

The addiction works — until it empties us.

I remember hitting one of my biggest milestones, the kind of win my old self would have celebrated for weeks. Everyone around me was congratulating me.

And all I felt was… tired.

That’s when I started asking:

What if the next level isn’t up?

The Truth About Growth

We think of growth like climbing a ladder.

Step after step, always higher.

But nature tells a different story.

  • A tree doesn’t just grow taller forever. It grows deeper roots.
  • A river doesn’t just rush forward. Sometimes it widens, slows, even carves sideways.
  • The seasons don’t just accelerate. They cycle — growth, harvest, rest, renewal.

Growth isn’t always about going “up.” It’s about expansion in the direction that’s needed.

Sometimes that’s upward — pushing into new levels of achievement.
But sometimes it’s inward — healing what we’ve ignored.
Sometimes it’s downward — building the roots to hold what we’ve already built.
Sometimes it’s outward — into love, relationships, community.

Nature shows us: growth has shades. But we’ve been trained to see only one.

The Problem with “Up”

High performers often mistake “different” for “less.”

If it’s not more, it must mean I’m slowing down.
If it’s not higher, it must mean I’m losing my edge.

But that’s not true.

The truth is: only chasing up makes your life one-dimensional.

And eventually, that dimension collapses.

Pause & Reflect

Pause & Reflect icon
  1. Where in your life are you climbing because it’s expected…not because it’s what you truly want?
  2. And if you stopped asking “What’s next up?” and started asking “What’s next true?”
    What would shift?

Coaching Tool of the Week

The Seasons Check

Instead of asking yourself “What’s my next level?”

Ask: “What season am I in?”

  • Growth (building, stretching, climbing)
  • Harvest (enjoying, savoring, receiving)
  • Rest (pausing, integrating, breathing)
  • Renewal (exploring, reinventing, beginning again)

Let your season guide your growth. Because trying to force summer in the middle of winter is why so many high performers burn out.

Final Thought

Not every next level is higher.

Sometimes it’s deeper.

Sometimes it’s slower.

Sometimes it’s simply choosing the season you’re actually in.
