The more I coach other coaches and entrepreneurs, the more I realize that the underlying need for so many of us really boils down to creating more FREEDOM.

I’ve coached entrepreneurs who have enough wealth that if they wish to, they can decide not to work another day in their life. Yet, they find it hard even to take a few days off for their family or themselves.

I’ve coached leaders who have a track record of success against their name. Yet, they feel more trapped by this success instead of feeling more free as a result of it.

I’ve coached coaches who transitioned from their corporate careers into their dream job of being of service to others. Yet, suddenly the excitement wears off and they find themselves in a new rat race that doesn’t look too different from the one they left.

Freedom is not really the wealth you have accumulated or the successes you have enjoyed. It really comes down to a FEELING.

And the truth is that the more successful we become, the more freedom tends to elude us.

Which is why as a coach, if you are able to support your clients to create more freedom in their life and business, you will help them fulfill a deep underlying lifelong need which is priceless.

And as a coach, if you can create this freedom in your own life, you become a living example for everyone you coach.

Which is why in this newsletter, I am going to share the 3 principles that I use to help my clients create more freedom – both in their life and business.

Principle #1 - Freedom FROM vs Freedom TO.

So many entrepreneurs, I speak to tell me this,

“I go on vacation and I wake up at 6:30 AM and get 3 hours of work done before my family wakes up. And then we go and spend the day together. That’s a free day right?

“Not really, that’s a work day in a really nice location”, I replied.

Because to me, you haven’t really gained freedom FROM thinking about work. You haven’t completely disconnected – which is what you were really seeking freedom TO do.

Just like this entrepreneur, most of us desire for FREEDOM FROM things in our life and business. Yet we are not clear about what we seek FREEDOM TO do or be. Which is why this is the first step to coaching your clients to create more freedom.

Coaching Tool 1: The Freedom Audit

Principle #2 - What does Freedom really mean to you?

While everyone seeks freedom, very few people have asked themselves the question, What does freedom really mean to me and for me?

The primary reason why people struggle to find freedom is that they don’t know what they want. They may have a vague idea of what they want, but they haven’t defined it clearly enough. Without a clear definition, they can’t create a plan to move towards it.

It’s like getting into a cab and asking the cabbie to take you somewhere without really telling him where you’d like to go. This is where you can step in as their coach.

Coaching Tool 2: Create the FREEDOM filter.

Invite your clients to do a simple reflection around this question:

What does freedom look like and feel like for me?

Having this as my personal definition of freedom helps me filter out people, places and projects that are not in alignment. It helps me say HELL YES to things and makes it easier for me to say NO without feeling guilty.

What about you and your clients? How can you help them create a similar filter to support them with their own decisions?

Principle #3 - The 5 Kinds of Personal Freedom. Which one are you seeking most?

In my experience, there 5 kinds of personal freedoms that we are all chasing:

Each kind of freedom comes with its own roadblocks and demands a different plan of action. The challenge arises when we expect all of these freedoms to be achieved overnight!

While the end goal is to feel a tremendous sense of freedom across all these 5 areas, you have to help your clients realize that the journey to getting there requires patience, planning and persistence. It’s a process that can take years, even decades.

And it all starts with asking yourself,

Which of these freedoms do I seek most right now? What am I willing to do about it?

Coaching Tool 3: The 3 C’s for Creating Freedom.

Applying these 3 principles of freedom has been a game changer for me and my clients.

There is nothing more delightful than seeing an entrepreneur, a creative visionary or a talented leader who has found the freedom to fully express themselves in the world.

Are you an entrepreneur, a coach or a creative visionary who is seeking to continuously expand your freedom? Which of these 5 kinds of freedom are you seeking most?
